Abstract

The study investigated the attitude of pre-service science teachers of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education towards teaching profession. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study comprised all Biology, Chemistry and Physics students totaling 1,782 students the sample comprises 300 students drawn through stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. The instrument used for data collection was Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Attitude towards Teaching Profession Questionnaire (PSSTATPQ). The reliability of the instrument was established by applying Cronbach alpha statistics to obtain a coefficient of 0. 74. Frequency count and percentage were used to answer the research questions while chi-square was used to test the hypotheses. The result of the study revealed that a greater percentage of the students have positive attitude towards teaching profession. The result also indicated that there is no significant difference between the attitude of male and female pre-service science teachers towards teaching profession. The study recommended among others that admission into teacher training programs should be by first choice.
